In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Sinners Prayer

Introduction

The sinners prayer in Catholic spirituality is a heartfelt act of repentance, humility, and return to God. It is not a formula but a movement of the soul that recognizes sin, seeks mercy, and desires reconciliation with the Father. This prayer opens the heart to grace and prepares the soul to receive the forgiveness God generously offers in Christ.

Scripture Foundation

“A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
Psalm 51:17 (RSV-CE)

“Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful.”
Joel 2:13 (NABRE)

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7494970885522256"
data-ad-slot="6512960193"
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins.”
1 John 1:9 (RSV-CE)

“The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.”
Psalm 103:8 (NABRE)

Catholic Reflection

The sinners prayer expresses a central truth of the Catholic faith: God is always ready to forgive. The Church teaches that repentance is not about despair or shame, but about returning to the One who loves us. Every sincere cry for mercy opens the heart to grace. True repentance involves acknowledging sin, expressing sorrow, desiring conversion, and trusting in God’s mercy.

This prayer mirrors the humility of the prodigal son and the contrition of King David. It leads the soul toward deeper conversion and prepares one for sacramental confession, where forgiveness is completed and celebrated. In praying with sincerity, the heart begins to heal, and the soul grows more attuned to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

A Catholic sinners prayer is not an isolated act; it is part of a lifelong journey of maturing in faith. Each act of repentance draws us closer to God, helps us resist sin, and strengthens our relationship with Christ. It is a moment of grace in which the soul turns from darkness toward the light of God’s love.

Main Catholic Prayer

God our Father,
I come before You with a humble and repentant heart.
You know my sins, my weaknesses, and the ways I have failed to love You and others.
Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, You have opened the path of mercy and forgiveness.
Send forth the Holy Spirit to enlighten my conscience and renew my heart.

Lord, I am truly sorry for my sins.
I ask for Your mercy and the grace to turn away from whatever separates me from You.
Strengthen me to make amends where needed, to seek reconciliation, and to walk faithfully in Your ways.

Jesus, I trust in the power of Your Cross and Resurrection.
You came to save sinners—draw me into Your healing love.
Wash me clean and restore the joy of my salvation.

Holy Spirit, guide my steps toward conversion.
Help me grow in virtue, avoid temptation, and remain close to Your light.
Lead me to the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere and contrite heart.

Mary, Mother of Mercy, accompany me as I seek to follow Your Son with greater faith and humility.
All you saints of God, pray for me.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Catholic Devotional Addition

Act of Contrition (Traditional Form)
“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You,
and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell,
but most of all because they offend You, my God,
who are all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace,
to confess my sins, to do penance,
and to amend my life. Amen.”

Closing Blessing

May Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Act of Contrition is a fundamental Catholic prayer that expresses sorrow for sins and a sincere intention to turn away from sin and live a life pleasing to God. It is especially recited during the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) but can also be used in daily prayer as a way to seek God’s mercy and grace.

Through this prayer, we acknowledge our faults, express genuine remorse, and promise to strive for holiness with God’s help. The Act of Contrition reflects the message of 1 John 1:9, which assures us:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NIV)

Below are different versions of the Act of Contrition, each carrying the same spirit of repentance and renewal in Christ.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7494970885522256"

Traditional Act of Contrition Prayer

O my God,
I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell,
but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,
who art all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.
Amen.

Modern Act of Contrition (Contemporary Version)

My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance,
to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In His name, my God, have mercy.
Amen.

Short Act of Contrition

Lord Jesus,
Son of God,
Have mercy on me, a sinner.
I repent of my sins,
And I trust in Your mercy.
Amen.

Act of Contrition for Confession (Ideal for use during the Sacrament of Reconciliation)

O my God,
I am truly sorry for my sins,
because they separate me from You and Your love.
I humbly ask for Your forgiveness
and resolve with the help of Your grace
to turn away from sin and to follow You faithfully.
Jesus, my Savior, help me to love You more each day.
Amen.

Scriptural Basis for the Act of Contrition

1. God’s Mercy and Forgiveness

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NIV)

2. The Call to Repentance

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19, NIV)

3. God’s Readiness to Pardon

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12, NIV)

4. The Parable of the Prodigal Son (A powerful reminder of God’s forgiving heart)

“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” (Luke 15:18-19, NIV)

How to Use the Act of Contrition in Daily Life

Before Bedtime: End your day with an examination of conscience and recite the Act of Contrition, entrusting your soul to God’s mercy.

During Confession: Before receiving absolution, sincerely pray the Act of Contrition to express true sorrow for your sins.

During Personal Prayer: If you recognize a sin in your life, say this prayer immediately and ask for the grace to do better.

Before Receiving the Eucharist: If you are in a state of grace but feel the need to renew your repentance before receiving Holy Communion, say the Act of Contrition privately.

Prayer Prompt Faith Activity

Take a moment each evening to examine your conscience and recite the Act of Contrition as part of your nightly prayers.

If you haven’t been to Confession recently, schedule time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and use this prayer sincerely.
